The sport is embarking on what is potentially the most significant technical shift in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring major innovations in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Over a race distance, pilots will carefully oversee electrical energy – potentially on flying laps – to secure the optimal lap time.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which terms would make things clearer of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the competition as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favor of straightforward terms that directly explain the primary purpose of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that competitors will have more power to determine tactics regarding battery management, regeneration, and efficiency.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be shown on broadcast screens to aid the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

Car Design Evolution

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will employ moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to improve speed and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.
