Battlefield 6's Relaxed Game Mode Sparks Intense Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but features a few key adjustments:
- Every squad has only 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
- Activities done by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
- Features like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
In short, the playlist delivers on its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, as it provides more options for gamers seeking alternative methods to enjoy the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. In other words, many BF6 players are mad.
Player Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," states a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," and someone else lists everything they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Criticisms and Player Feedback
All that said, players have constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it could increase wait times more extended for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists in the game already. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to remove bot farms from the mode. So this new playlist seems like the player base meeting them halfway, according to a Reddit comment. Another labels this addition as the developers "making a mistake so hard, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Future Prospects: Adjustments Be Made?
If Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
