The British tennis star earned the most important victory of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win marks Norrie's first ever victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest British man in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from injury last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my tennis journey, my first win over the world No 1 and probably the strongest player in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which was the top run of results in the Spaniard's developing professional path.

The top seed looked to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he eased through the opening set. However, the British contender gradually battled back into contention by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into lengthy, physical exchanges. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability gradually made an impact.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz served well but he found it challenging to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The young star looked notably uneasy executing his forehand, which has been the best shot in the sport for most of this season, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, the British player offered his opponent minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, physicality and penetration the entire contest while performing well on serve and picking his spots to move inside the baseline and attack well.
