Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Message That Sparked the Dispute

The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who formerly served in armed forces or security roles.

"Like us, you all made an vow to safeguard and uphold this founding document," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Response

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a angry response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders React

Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint declaration censuring the statements.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our country with great loyalty and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme digital publications and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a response.

"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this country and made an vow to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and obligation to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."

More Political Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of government members."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."

The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of Congress advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and decide all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson said. "You have current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the president's legal commands."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
