Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
