Israeli citizens observe second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until all the hostages come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city said another two victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south, medics said.
