Jurgen Klopp states coming back to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who left Anfield in 2024, remarked that rejoining the club is something that could happen. Klopp, following a hugely successful near-decade reign which brought continental glory and the Reds’ first league title since 1990, now holds roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and as an advisor to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won England's top flight last season, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would embrace the possibility that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he told his interviewer: “I said I will never coach a different club in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...yeah. It's plausible.”
“Being 58, which suggests I could make the decision later on, I don’t know. Must I choose now? If so, I wouldn't return. Fortunately, it's not necessary. I can just see how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding which situations would have to unfold to bring him back to management, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “No longing for management; No desire to be under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to interviews four times, three times a week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area in that context, yet sharing a meal with the team having a nice chat, that’s nice. Success was frequent thus frequently a very good mood in the building. I still have Van Dijk's laughter in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the tweaks which secured the championship in the previous season. The team has suffered four in a row across various tournaments post heavy investment, yet he dismissed the idea of it representing the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words if spoken against. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good well-judged squad. You don’t have to worry over the club, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of Jota, a player he signed in 2020, and its impact on Liverpool. The Portugal international was killed in a car crash together with his sibling this past summer.
“Can you substitute such an individual? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, it's his character. It's hard to picture the squad absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A devastating blow for the entire squad also. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it for poor performances though it's a fact. Being in that space which he filled completely. Handling this individually is not easy. Unbearable.”
