Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
