New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the Met Office.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Medical Advisories Activated
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
