Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested the law and the legal system triumphed.

A couple of months subsequent to receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated plotter – who had been under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges unfold – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid mounting talk that he will be sent to a notorious high-security facility.

Previous Comments on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited minimal mercy for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we offer those scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Destination Debate

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, several of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent attempt to discourage the high court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, stated he anticipated the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the last election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding forty detainees: “It's almost one meter squared per detainee.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they grumble, of course, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out before the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Authoring in a major newspaper, another ally, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its past”.

“It represents an injustice that erodes the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Opinion

That may be correct due to the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of numerous individuals who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to stop his successor from becoming president – and even scheming to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the sitting leader's allied group, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to receive proper handling – but respectful treatment in prison. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long celebrating the harsh handling of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently argued that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – opted to visit a penitentiary to find out what situations are actually like,” he stated.

“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading treatment”.

Likely Prison Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of prisoners, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the spectacular leader's home, around 20 kilometers away.

According to sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – about the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter WC with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and also a minibar in his room as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Partisan Reactions

The lawmaker denounced the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his outcome in the {
