As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
