Decades-old racism is returning within UK the political arena, which creates deeply uneasy, the Prime Minister has stated, alerting how divisive hard-right political tactics are “dividing the nation”.

Tackling Racist Language and Divisive Strategies

Speaking to GP and TV personality Amir Khan, Starmer accused the Reform UK party for enabling the revival of discriminatory and divisive politics that seemed a thing of the past long ago”.

In the interview, broadcast on a popular morning program on Tuesday, the PM provided his strongest signal that the limit on child benefits could be removed during the upcoming fiscal announcement in the coming weeks.

Commitment to Combat Poverty Among Children

Asked if he would scrap the limit, as noted by advocacy groups is the biggest driver of poverty for children across Britain, the Prime Minister responded: “I want to state unequivocally I am determined to reduce child poverty.”

He listed steps ministers have already introduced such as no-cost school lunches, morning meal programs, and child care support but added: “We must go beyond these efforts, and I assure you and tell you I am personally committed to cutting child poverty.”

Pressed on whether his remarks indicated he intended to remove the two-child limit, he stated he “wouldn’t be telling you we are going to drive down poverty among children unless I was certain that measures will be introduced several steps for that purpose”.

Strong Indications from the Chancellor

The Chancellor, gave a similarly clear signal on Monday when she told a national radio station how finally, a child should not be penalised because their parents don’t have very much money”.

Ministers are understood to be preparing to lift the limit entirely, having originally looked at gradual removal for bigger households or richer ones. The Resolution Foundation projects this would cost roughly £3.5 billion in the coming years.

Ideological Split and National Renewal

During the discussion, the Prime Minister said the ideological split currently in Britain was between Labour’s “patriotic national renewal” versus “the toxic division of Reform” and other right-wing groups that are “splitting the UK”.

“Parts of the discourse we’re hearing – discriminatory talk, polarizing language – which I believed was resolved decades ago has reemerged in political debate leaving people fearful,” he said.

“We have to stand up such discrimination, that division, and we have to proudly say that to be British is to have concern for others, requires rationality, is to be tolerant and kindness, and this is our pride.”

Reflecting Warnings from Wes Streeting

Starmer mirrored language expressed by the Health Secretary, who cautioned recently that an “ugly” racism reminiscent of past decades had become worryingly commonplace again with NHS staff were bearing the brunt of it.

Streeting said incidents of both verbal and physical attacks targeting individuals due to race had become so frequent making it “tolerated to hold racist views”.

“We must end on racism in this country and we’ve got to put such harmful attitudes that’s found expression in our country where it belongs and once again create an environment in this country that rejects racism to be racist,” Streeting stated.

Critical Decision for the Public

Starmer used his speech at the Labour party conference this autumn to outline clear divisions with his political opponents, stating that the public faced a “defining choice”.

The prime minister explained he was engaged in a “fight for the soul of our country”, noting although the public expressed valid worries regarding unauthorized immigration, there was “a moral line” that Farage and others had overstepped.

The PM vowed to “fight” anyone claiming that non-white individuals were not truly British and that families who had lived in the UK for generations should be deported, saying those advocating these ideas constituted “an enemy of national renewal”.

“Encouraging racist violence and hatred, that is not expressing concern: it’s criminal. This party – this great party – is proud of our flags, yet if they are painted with hateful messages, targeting a business owner to leave the country, that’s not pride; that’s racism,” he told activists.
